Elon Musk Shares Show Tesla’s ‘Gigafactory’ Berlin to Open in 2021, Becoming the Car Manufacturer’s First Auto Factory in Europe

  • The huge construction facility is located in Grünheide, 40 kilometers from Berlin
  • Upon completion, it produces battery parts, powertrains and Model Y cars
  • This ‘Gigafactory 4’ joins its predecessors in Nevada, New York and Shanghai
  • It is unclear whether the plant will have the ‘mega rave cave’ that teased Mr. Musk earlier

Elon Musk has shared a view of Tesla’s Gigafactory Berlin Brandenburg, which will open in 2021 and become the car manufacturer’s first auto factory in Europe.

The huge construction factory – which is being built in Grünheide, 40 kilometers southeast of Berlin – will be the company’s fourth factory.

Upon completion, the plant is expected to produce battery parts and powertrains for use in Tesla cars, as well as the Tesla Model Y, an electric crossover commercial vehicle.

First announced in 2019, construction and foundation works began in June 2020 on the 300-hectare site at the Freienbrink industrial estate.

The digital display of the extensive facility appears to show a large reception center, some form of water feature or swimming pool, greenery and seating area on an upper floor and a roof with several solar panels.

Chimneys for the factory are “carefully hidden,” added Mr. Musk, when asked why they weren’t clear in the three-dimensional mock-up.

Work on the site was delayed early in the year when an environmental group – the Green League Brandenburg – appealed to local courts against deforestation of parts of the man-made pine forest that covers the site.

When in use, the facility is expected to produce 150,000 vehicles per year – with the ultimate goal of reaching 500,000 vehicles per year – and will initially employ up to 12,000 people.

“Gigafactory is the product even more than the car,” Musk tweeted in response to whether each of the production facilities improved the previous one.

Musk previously teased in a Twitter poll that the Gigafactory Berlin might even have a so-called ‘mega-rave cave’ under the production floor.

When asked about the position – and if there were any views of it – Tesla’s CEO replied that ‘there might be an indoor / outdoor space on the roof.’

The Gigafactory Berlin joins its three existing counterparts: Gigafactory 1 in Nevada, Gigafactory 2 in New York and Gigafactory 3 in Shanghai, China.
