Ed Buck’s friends tell how the Democratic donor became addicted to drugs and show his love for black men
Ed Buck’s former friends have revealed how the Democratic donor became addicted to drugs and laid out his love for black men before appearing in court over two deaths in his West Hollywood apartment.
The Democratic donor pleaded not guilty to distributing methamphetamine, resulting in the deaths of Timothy Dean in January 2019 and Gemmel Moore in 2017.
Federal prosecutors say 65-year-old Buck has been hunting vulnerable gay men and pressuring them to inject drugs as part of a sexual ritual. Buck is also accused of providing meth to three more men, including one who has overdosed.
Now former acquaintances and friends have detailed how Buck’s personality changed after he became addicted to drugs. The activist who got hold of Moore’s diary also shared the diary with a for the first time New York Times news reporter.
A former friend, known only as M, told the newspaper Buck had told M.’s then husband, “That’s a beautiful black man you have on your arm.”
After noting that another black man they’d seen was his “type,” Buck is said to have replied to M, “Yeah, but I think they’re stupid.”

Former boyfriend Charlie Harrison said, “Buck always had a fondness for black guys. There was a guy he spent a lot of time with, but then, as Buck said, it was mostly “meaningful hourly relationships.” ‘
After Buck was accused of using racist language, Harrison said, “No one on the planet, except Martin Luther King, put 100 percent behind the fight against bigotry more than Buck. It’s like calling Martin Luther King biased. ‘
But Ryan Gierach, an old neighbor of Buck’s, said “there is another side” to him.

Four-time Mayor of West Hollywood, John Duran, said Buck’s personality changed when he started taking drugs.
Duran said, “ Ed’s story is one I’ve seen in a lot of people in West Hollywood, gay men who eventually begin to attach sex’s attachment to meth, then meth takes over and consumes their lives.
When you saw Ed after 2013, he was agitated, lost weight, angry, and cheerful at council meetings. Appointments are missing or do not show up. These are all symptoms of someone under the influence of meth. ‘
Activist Jasmyne Cannick is said to be holding Moore’s diary before his death. She has now shown the physical book to The New York Times.
Cannick, who discovered new evidence in the case and pushed for two years to file prosecutors against Buck, had not previously shown it to reporters.
Buck’s lawyers say it is “unverified writing.”
But Moore’s friend Cory McLean said he told him to ‘write things down … because I wanted to expose him [Buck]. ‘
In an article, Moore is said to have written: ‘I really don’t know what to do. I have become addicted to drugs and the worst of them. Ed Buck is the one to thank. He gave me my first shot of crystal meth, it was very painful, but after all the trouble I got addicted to the pain and fetish / fantasy.
‘My life is at an unprecedented high level at the moment and I mean that from all sides. I ended up with Buck again and was manipulated to hit again. I even got to the point where I was forced to do 4 within a 2 day period. This man is crazy and it is sad. Will I ever get help? ‘
Slamming is a slang term used among gay men to inject drugs such as mephedrone, GHB or crystal meth.
In Moore’s last entry on December 3, 2016, he is said to have written, “If it didn’t hurt that bad, I’d kill myself, but I’ll let Ed Buck do it for now.”

In July 2017, Moore was found ‘wearing only white socks’ and ‘unresponsive on the living room floor in Buck’s residence and was pronounced dead after police arrived,’ the DEA agent wrote.
Dean was also found on the floor of the apartment in January 2019 ‘wearing only white underwear,’ with two rubber rings around his scrotum and penis, the document said.
The federal complaint reveals that Buck continued to “ ask men for sex and drug use ” after Dean’s death, as late as July 2019, according to other alleged victims interviewed by the DEA.
He has been denied bail and is being held in a prison in downtown Los Angeles. His trial had been postponed until next year.
