The Foreign Ministry said the workers went to Israel as part of a mobility agreement.

New Delhi:

India said on Thursday it has urged Israel to ensure the safety of Indian construction workers who went to the country this week under a bilateral mobility deal.

Israeli Ambassador to India Naor Gilon had said on Tuesday that the first batch of more than sixty Indian construction workers had left for Israel.

“As you know, these (first batch of) employees went to Israel as part of a mobility agreement we signed with the country,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said at his weekly media briefing.

“This agreement predates the conflict. We are aware of their safety. We urged Israeli authorities to ensure their safety and well-being,” he said.

Mr. Jaiswal said there are currently about 18,000 Indian healthcare providers working in Israel and the Indian embassy in that country is in contact with them.

Following the conflict between Israel and Hamas, media reports emerged saying that the Israeli construction industry wants to recruit 100,000 Indian workers to replace 90,000 Palestinians.

Last month, India said it is focusing on ensuring the safety and security of all its citizens in Israel, following the death of an Indian in that country in a rocket attack allegedly launched by Hezbollah.
