The UFC is reportedly targeting a lightweight title fight between Charles Oliveira and Dustin Poirier before the end of the year at UFC 269, with the pair reportedly having verbally agreed to the bout.

Poirier, 32, has long earned another shot at the 155-pound title after taking a string of impressive wins following his defeat to Khabib Nurmagomedov in 2019.

Consecutive wins over Conor McGregor this year have put the Diamond in pole position for a belt tilt, occupied by Oliveira after the Brazilian defeated Michael Chandler for the vacated title from Nurmagomedov earlier this year.

And MMA fighting reports that on December 11, UFC chiefs Oliveira vs. Poirier want to plan for UFC 269.

Oliveira and Poirier are said to have verbally agreed to fight at UFC 269, although no contracts have been issued yet.

The lightweight rivals are set to headline the pay-per-view event, at a venue yet to be announced, with Amanda Nunes defending her bantamweight title against Julianna Pena in the co-main event.

After opting to pursue a third – and more lucrative – match against McGregor, Poirier has his sights set on Oliveira and UFC gold.

The Louisianan crowned himself “undisputed world champion” on Twitter this week, with many arguing that Poirier is the lightweight division champion in all but name.

“I think Poirier now deserves to be champion. That’s my opinion,” Nurmagomedov said in February.

The win for Poirier would mean a sensational 2021 where he would most likely be named ‘Fighter of the Year’.
