Driver Joshua Scott accused of killing elderly man in hit-and-run at Chermside Brisbane allegedly then set borrowed car alight with cleaning fluid

A man accused of hitting a pedestrian in a fatal hit-and-run used cleaning fluid and then set the borrowed car on fire, police said.

Joshua Alexander Scott allegedly flashed a red indicator at high speed, before hitting the 72-year-old man at the intersection of Kittyhawk Drive and Murphy Road in Chermside, in Brisbane’s north, on Thursday morning.

It is believed the elderly man was out for a morning walk when he was struck by a car at the intersection.

The pedestrian suffered “serious injuries” and died on the way to hospital.

Scott, 35, allegedly slowed down after impact, then accelerated, running another red light before driving into nearby Wavell Heights, burning the car and throwing his phone away.

Police allege Scott then poured a bottle of flammable cleaning fluid onto the driver’s seat of the borrowed Honda CRV and used a lighter to set the car on fire.

Scott was later arrested at his workplace in Geebung and charged with dangerous driving causing death, leaving the scene without obtaining assistance and arson.

Scott’s case was briefly mentioned in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Friday, but he was not required to appear.

He was remanded in custody and the case was adjourned to April 15.
