Dodgers shortstop Gavin Lux suffered what appeared to be a painful right knee injury Monday in a game against the San Diego Padres when his knee gave way while running from second to third base in the top of the sixth inning.
Lux lay writhing on the ground for several minutes before being hauled off the field on the back of a golf cart.
“We don’t know anything yet,” Andrew Friedman, the Dodgers’ president of baseball operations, said of Lux’s injury.
After singled and advanced to second on a walk, Lux broke for third on a ground ball that was grounded to third base by Luke Williams.
When Padres threw third baseman Jantzen Witte to second base, Lux appeared to try to duck for the ball.
That’s when his knee gave way, appearing to bend backward and send him tumbling to third base.
Lux immediately grabbed his knee as he rolled to the floor in pain. Third base coach Dino Ebel immediately beckoned a coach.
Manager Dave Roberts knelt in front of Lux as he was treated onto the pitch.
Lux was helped to his feet, then stumbled onto the back of the golf cart.
In the spring, Lux would be a major part of the roster in 2023, moving on to become the team’s starting shortstop – succeeding Trea Turner in the role – after spending last season at second base.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
