The Los Angeles Dodgers’ minor league affiliate, the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes, adopted an inappropriate slang word as their new nickname.
On Thursday, the Quakes announced they will be going by the ‘Jackets’ to pay homage to the iconic jackets worn by the Mariachis during a series of three Copa de la DiversiĆ³n events.
Although the word ‘jacket’ translates to ‘jacket’ in English, it is also slang for masturbation.
While higher-ups apparently didn’t understand the secondary meaning of the word, fans were quick to criticize the urban definition of the word on social media.
As a result, the team removed its ad. Shortly after, the team backtracked and put the nickname back through a vetting process.

The Spanish word ‘chaquetas’ means ‘jackets’ but is also used as slang to refer to masturbation.
“We immediately worried: Have we made an irreversible mistake here?” Quakes executive vice president and general manager Grant Riddle told the Los Angeles Times on Friday.
‘And then we immediately re-engaged with those groups… and determined pretty quickly that none of them were aware of it either. So that wasn’t his first immediate thought.
‘And just the idea that obviously (the slang definition) exists, but that our intention was none other than the literal translation. We’re not trying to have fun with this.’
Hours later, the team’s front office doubled down on the name and reposted its announcement. They cited the presence and value of Mariachi music among the Mexican communities of Southern California.
“In Southern California, mariachi music is a highly prized art form,” the ad said.
The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes adopted the nickname as a tribute to the Mariachi jackets.
Additionally, the choice of name was, in part, an homage to Dodger pitcher and Rancho Cucamonga resident Joe Kelly. During his visit to the White House in 2021, Kelly memorably wore a black mariachi jacket.
“He wasn’t simply making an exceptional stylistic choice,” the Quakes wrote. “Rather, the pitcher was honoring music’s most esteemed qualities, many of which he shares with baseball: artistry, years of dedication to the craft, teamwork and the privilege of wearing such historically significant uniforms.”
Riddle also noted that the name ‘Mariachi’ has already been claimed by another team. His team previously adopted the nickname “Tremboles,” which translates as “earthquakes.”
The team will continue playing as the Quakes in games outside of the Copa de la Diversion.
