On Friday, March 17, 2023, the English football club Crystal Palace announced the dismissal of its French coach, Patrick Vieira, after a series of poor results, 11 stages before the end of the Premier League.
“Crystal Palace Football Club can confirm that Patrick Vieira has left his position as head coach of the first team,” read a statement from the 12th-place club.
“Ultimately, results in recent months have put us in a precarious position in the league and we felt that change was necessary to give us the best chance of staying in the Premier League,” chairman Steve Parish was quoted as saying.
Palace did not achieve any victory in the league this year, specifically in the last 11 matches, and it suffered three defeats in a row, the last of which was against Brighton 0-1 on Wednesday.
This season is witnessing an intense struggle to stay in the top flight, as five points separate the twelfth and last-placed Palace.
The former midfielder, and the Arsenal legend, who won the league title three times with him, arrived at Palace in the summer of 2021 and finished last season in twelfth place, 13 points from the relegation zone, and reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup before leaving against Chelsea.
As for this season, the French team, which won the 1998 World Cup, was bid farewell in the third round against bottom club Southampton, and its last victory dates back to the last day of last year over Bournemouth.
