- Kyle, 34, made an offer on the New Mexico property earlier this year.
- He and his wife thought they had found their dream home, but they had a problem.
- The resulting photos have gone viral, leaving thousands of people shuddering at the sight of the space.
Kyle, 34, made an offer on the property earlier this year knowing it had some sort of backyard retreat.
However, when they got there, the damp space reminded them of something more sinister in the garden.
He referenced the 2022 horror film Barbarian, which heavily features a nightmarish basement bomb shelter.
“The first thing I thought of was the movie Barbarian or the scene in The Silence of the Lambs where Jodie Foster is in Buffalo Bill’s basement and you see his rotting corpse in the bathtub. I didn’t go down that day, as you can imagine,” she said.

Kyle even joked in a Reddit He posts that ‘it’s definitely going to be nicknamed The Sex Dungeon.’
He said Newsweek Magazine that the shelter was really the only drawback to what they thought was a wonderful opportunity.
“My wife was hired at a nearby university, so I arrived early to meet with a real estate agent and look at some houses,” he said.
“The house was in great condition. It was the best I’d seen all weekend, but it had one problem: it had a creepy bomb shelter.”
As they lamented about the shelter, they referred to the property they had purchased as “their dream home.”
It took Kyle a while to venture into the shelter for fear of “the state he might be in.”
“I was convinced that it would be a damp and disgusting environment down there. I mentally prepared myself for the worst: maybe a few centimetres of murky water on the floor or an old, dirty mattress,” he added.
However, what he actually found were more or less just signs of neglect and decay.

However, what he actually found were more or less signs of neglect and disrepair. Kyle plans to turn it into a music room.
“Luckily, it was just a little scary and there were no poisonous insects or snakes down there.”
Kyle, who is no longer afraid of the underground bomb shelter, now plans to turn it into a space for his art.
“I definitely don’t want it to look like an underground concrete box. As soon as I saw the space, I was all for it, as I’ve always dreamed of having a music room,” he said.
He plans to place the drums and amplifiers inside to take advantage of the room’s soundproofing qualities.
The original Reddit post has since sparked a wild reaction, with more than 31,000 people in shock over the find.
Although many were stunned, some of them had ideas to turn it into a room similar to what Kyle plans to do, like a man cave or a study.

“I’m glad I posted about this, as some Reddit users pointed out the dangers of poison gas that I hadn’t considered, and others pointed out structural issues. This prompted me to contact an inspector and have them examine the walls and ceiling,” she said.
