He may have fallen to fifth in line to the throne, but the Duke of Sussex at least has the consolation of being the king of misery memoirs. But could even that title be taken away from him?
I ask this because of the possible publication of a compelling new work by a man who suffered the loss of his two sons.
Nicholas Monson, who was married three times and whose eldest son was killed by Kenyan police, says his book also contains details of an old-fashioned childhood, including the first time he was beaten.
“It was at my prep school, Falkner House in Notting Hill,” Lord Monson, 68, tells me.
“I was five or six,” he recalls, adding that the smiling principal told him to pull down his pants and shorts, then hit him with a hairbrush.

“The shock was so great that I peed on his lap,” says Monson, who jokingly suggested to a friend that he should title his book ‘Heir.’
The friend, Francis O’Toole, arranged a photo shoot with Hollywood photographer Rory Lewis. Monson approves of this ironic image and assures me that his memoirs will have a very different tone to Prince Harry’s.
“He complains about being a ‘sober’, but then again, that’s the case for anyone who isn’t the oldest child,” Monson reflects, adding that while his childhood was not pleasant, his adult life has been “wonderful” albeit marred by tragedy.
