Coco Austin Says She’s Still Breastfeeding Her 5-Year-Old Daughter: ‘Why Would You Take That From Her?’
Her daughter Chanel will be 6 in November, but when it comes to breastfeeding, Coco Austin says she’s “not going to just say no.”
The model and TV personality, 42, has told Us Weekly that she still cares for her 5-year-old daughter with husband Ice-T. While the little girl is on solid foods and will “eat steak and burgers,” she also enjoys “a little snack now and then” — as in, being nursed.
“Chanel still loves my boobs,” Austin shared in comments just as August National Breastfeeding Month kicks off. “It’s a great moment of bonding for a mother and your child.”
She added that she plans to follow her daughter’s lead instead of shutting her down completely.
“Why would you take that away from her?” she said. “If she doesn’t want it, okay, then stop. But I’m not just going to say no.”
The former Ice Cream Loves Coco star spoke out about her extensive breastfeeding last year, posting a photo of her suckling her then 4-year-old daughter. Austin explained that “at the moment in nursing it’s just for comfort” rather than food, noting that she’s received messages from other moms praising her for persevering.
While the World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends breastfeeding “until two years and beyond,” data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that only 35.3 percent of infants breastfeed at age 1 and 14.6 percent at 18 months.
The website for the nonprofit organization for breastfeeding advocates La Leche League International, meanwhile, advises that “if you and your child enjoy breastfeeding, there is no reason to stop. You will both benefit from breastfeeding for as long as you want. Many mothers choose to wean naturally, allowing the child to outgrow the need.” gradually, in his own time.”
Nursing isn’t the only area where Austin’s family is going against the grain. She also told Us Weekly that she and Ice-T also allow Chanel and their four dogs to sleep with them in their “family bed.” The family also does not adhere to a strict schedule.
“We’re more into nightlife,” she said. “People need to understand, we have different times. Sometimes I work until 2 am. When? [Ice-T’s] on tour he does a show at midnight… So we’ll get it across in a different way. Chanel gets up at 11 in the afternoon.”
