FC Bayern is in the Champions League before the end. In the first leg of the quarter-finals at Manchester City, the Munich back line shook violently. Dayot Upamecano made a bad mistake by losing the ball before the 0:2. Ex-professional Holger Badstuber takes the central defender to task.
“That shouldn’t happen to him at this level!”, the 2013 Champions League winner said in his blog after Bayern Munich’s 3-0 defeat at Manchester City.
“I remembered a lesson in my Bayern youth when a former top defender and CL winner asked me the following question after a game: ‘Holger, what is the most difficult game?’ He asked me and I had to think . He then provided the answer immediately afterwards: ‘The simple game! The simple game is the most difficult.’ It was Thomas Linke,” Badstuber recalled about his active career.
The 34-year-old then sharply criticized Upamecano. “Why didn’t he play the simple ball? Why did he go into provocative dribbling?” Badstuber asked: “As is well known, it wasn’t the first time that he made a game-changing mistake. If he doesn’t see the simple solutions, he always becomes a factor of uncertainty remain.”
Badstuber: FC Bayern must “go all out”
Upamecano must “deal with this criticism now, play a simple, clear game to cover the lines. This is the only way he will improve,” said Badstuber.
Manchester City is now the “clear favorite” in the quarter-final duel with FC Bayern. “Bayern has no choice but to go all out from the start. A quick goal, taking the crowd with you, then something is still possible in the Allianz Arena. FC Bayern have quality and the certainty that they can do it themselves against a team like ManCity can create chances,” Badstuber said.
