Formerly known as BHP House, 140 William Street is a 41-storey, 152m-high, heritage-listed commercial building built between 1969 and 1972.

At the time of its construction, it was the tallest steel-framed building in Australia.

This skyscraper was the first office building in Australia to implement a “total energy concept”, generating its own electricity using natural gas from BHP.

Social media users were shocked by the incident.

“I bet it would have been horrible to be under that,” one wrote.

“It’s a little hard to explain a window pane clearly bisecting me at terminal velocity on my morning commute.”

One linked the incident to working from home with a tongue-in-cheek joke.

‘Another reason not to go to the office. “Even buildings tell people to stay,” they wrote.

“FAAAAAARRRRRK it’s a bad day to be a pedestrian,” another added.
