- Channel 7 has made big changes to its AFL coverage for 2025
- A television program that has been on air for seven years has been eliminated
A former AFL star has spoken of his sadness after Channel 7 opted to cancel a long-running football show for the 2025 season.
The Armchair Experts will not continue next year and co-host Adam Cooney will reveal SEN Breakfast Tuesday morning that the show would be called off.
‘Who would have thought that show wouldn’t last forever? It’s a sad day. The Armchair Experts are no more,” the former Western Bulldogs star said in his appearance on the radio station.
It comes amid a huge media shake-up that has occurred across the Australian sports broadcasting landscape in recent months.
As rival networks battle to produce the best coverage, Channel 7 has recruited Kane Cornes and Caroline Wilson, poaching the duo from Channel Nine.
Elsewhere, Mark Robinson recently announced he would be leaving his role at AFL360, with Garry Lyon joining Gerard Whateley on the football talk show.
Football great Adam Cooney has announced that Channel Seven has axed his and Cam Luke’s show The Armchair Experts.
Cooney and Luke (left and right) have been hosting the show for seven years, but it will come to an end in 2025.
Brownlow medalist Cooney joked that he had been a victim of the great media shake-up in Australian broadcasting.
Craig Hutchison and Nick Riewoldt have also joined Seven, while rumors have also circulated that Dustin Martin is ready to establish himself in the broadcasting landscape, having met up with the powers that be at Fox Footy for coffee in recent weeks.
However, one show will be absent next season, with Cooney reflecting on his journey, alongside co-host Cam Luke on The Armchair Experts.
‘Seven years. We start in digital. “We started on Twitter and eventually got to streaming,” he said.
“I’m just a victim of some of my colleagues here (at SEN) coming and taking the cash,” Cooney joked.
Over the years a number of panellists have joined the show including Georgie Parker and Tommy Sheridan.
While Cooney and Luke’s show will be scrapped, Seven has announced several new shows for the 2025 season.
The network is commissioning a new Netflix-style documentary, called Full Sweat, that will take fans behind the scenes during the lead-up to the 2025 season.
Cornes and Riewoldt will appear on The Agenda Setters to talk all things football over several nights, while Hamish McLachlan will host a new talk show called Unfiltered.
Kane Cornes is one of several football broadcasters who have joined Channel Seven for the 2025 season.
‘The 2024 AFL season was extraordinary. “A year forever, but we’re even more excited about what’s to come in 2025,” said Channel 7 Sports Director Chris Jones.
“We felt it was time to change it up, to prepare for our new, younger audiences, and we have welcomed some new faces who will help us reset the AFL media landscape for good.
‘New recruits including Kane Cornes, Nick Riewoldt and others will join our established commentary team. They make us more dynamic and boost our strategy to have a football offer seven days a week.
‘One of the first things we identified was that if we wanted to be the home of football, we needed to complete the offering and create the best football programs in the country.
‘Monday to Friday every night, there will be AFL content to watch or stream on Seven and 7plus Sport.
“So, with more nights of football programming throughout the AFL 2025 premier season, as well as live match broadcasts broadcast on 7plus Sport for the first time, there has never been a more exciting time for AFL fans “.
