  • Mama made six creamy pasta meals for just $9.80 to feed her family
  • The recipe idea is likely to help others amid the rising cost of living

A frugal mom has revealed how she fed her family of six for less than $10 as the cost of living continues to rise.

Brooke Schrempf-Dixon has become known for sharing budget-friendly recipes under the name ‘Aussie Mum Cooks’, and on this occasion she prepared creamy pasta with bacon and mushrooms.

For just $9.80, she bought baby spinach, bacon, fettuccini pasta, garlic butter, brown onion, and mushrooms from Coles.

She said the “delicious” dish was easy to make and will help other struggling families looking for affordable recipes.

“For the next four days, I have four $10 dinners to feed our family. This is such a simple basic pasta that you can easily add or subtract products to suit your needs and taste,” the mother of four wrote, sharing a viral video on TikTok.

The clip is part of a trend titled the “$10 meal challenge,” where you make a dish for no more than $10.

She has also prepared fish tacos, loaded potato and bacon soup, and slow cooker beef stroganoff.

“This is one of those dishes where you can throw in whatever you have in your fridge — and it was really delicious.” Worth trying!’ she said in the video.

After buying the ingredients, she started chopping the spinach, bacon and onion. Then she cooked the bacon and onion together in a pan with the herb butter and added the mushrooms.

She seasoned the ingredients with pepper and mixed spices from her spice cabinet, then added a splash of milk and flour for creaminess.

“You don’t have to do this, but it does give it a creamier base.” If you don’t have any, you can add some water or broth,” Brooke said.

The baby spinach was added and all the ingredients were stirred in.

Brooke then poured the cooked pasta with a cup of pasta water to thicken the dish before serving.

The end result looked beautiful and at least six portions were made.

The video has since been viewed more than 1.1 million times, with many thanking Brooke for the recipe idea.

“For under $10, that’s impressive,” one wrote, another added, “These $10 meals are going to help a lot.”

“I’m trying this now!” a third wrote.

But while many appreciated the meal idea, others disagreed with the use of pantry staples.

“For once, I’d like to see someone actually stick to the budget. Next time buy oil, milk, salt, pepper and stuff,’ someone commented.

“Other products are not included,” said another.
