Cinematographer Dick Pope has died at the age of 77.
The British film icon and double Oscar nominee was known for his work in films such as Mr Turner, The Illusionist and Secrets & Lies.
His death was confirmed in a statement from the British Society of Cinematographers on Wednesday which said: “It is with deep sadness that we learn of the passing of our friend and colleague Dick Pope BSC.”
Following the announcement, Tom Hardy, who worked with Dick on Legend, paid tribute on Instagram.
He wrote: ‘Dick Pope, British cinematographer, lovely friend and total legend. August 1947 October 2024.’

The statement announcing Dick’s death added: “Dick had a reputation as a wonderful collaborator and someone passionate about the art of filmmaking.”
“He was interested in embracing new technologies and ideas while ensuring that the skills and craft of those who came before him were not lost.”
The late cinematographer was known as ‘Dick Poop’ at an Oscar nomination performance in 2015.
He posted a response to the mispronunciation of his name just hours after Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) president Cheryl Boone Isaacs incorrectly read his nomination for Best Achievement in Cinematography at the 87th annual Academy Awards. of the Academy in Beverly Hills.
He told USA Today: ‘You know what? In my time I have been called much worse things.’
Dick continued: ‘I don’t think twice about something like that. I’m happy to be nominated. We are all very happy. It is wonderful news.
‘But I represent an entire company and the entire film. I represent the people who work on it. We are all very happy. Glad.’
He also shared that he received quite a bit of reaction from his friends and coworkers.
‘You don’t need to explain it to me. “They’ve explained it to me a hundred times,” Dick added.
‘I’m sorry for the lady who made the mispronunciation. I’ve never been on Twitter and I don’t know what trending means.
‘I’m completely naive. All I know is that I have a lot of emails here saying that I’m trending on Twitter. For all I care, they might as well be saying I’m going to land on the moon.
