Roderick Randall, 45, was arrested in Florida last weekend after his eight-year-old son took his firearm, which he believed was safely holstered, and shot a one-year-old who shared an adjacent motel room with
An eight-year-old boy accidentally shot and killed a one-year-old girl and injured a two-year-old girl at a Florida motel on Saturday night.
The boy’s father, Roderick Randall, 45, left the gun in a closet in his room he shared with his son, girlfriend, and her two daughters at Lion’s Motel, near Pensacola.
After leaving the room, his son found it and fired a bullet that went through the wall, killing the baby and hitting the toddler, Escambia County Sheriff Chip Simmons said Monday.
The injured children belong to Randall’s girlfriend.
The surviving toddler is expected to recover, Simmons said.
Kasey Bass, one, was accidentally shot and killed by the eight-year-old boy, who also injured her two-year-old sister. Bass was described as a ‘very happy and loving baby who was filled with joy’
Randall returned to the room, took the gun and what the investigators think were drugs, and left the room again, Simmons said.
He is charged with a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, two counts of culpable negligence in storing a firearm within the comfort of a minor, resulting in injuries, tampering with evidence and failing to dispose of a firearm in the required manner .
The victim was later identified as Kacey Bass. A GoFundMe Page founded by a relative to cover funeral expenses, the one-year-old described as a “very happy and loving baby who was filled with joy.”
The family member also described the shooting as a “tragic accident.”
The shooting took place at Lion’s Motel, near Pensacola, Florida, where Randall, his son, his girlfriend and her two daughters were staying.
As of Tuesday afternoon, there have been no donations made to the fundraising page, which is trying to reach a $3,500 goal.
The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office also revealed that Randall has an extensive criminal record, having previously been convicted of 14 charges.
He has been in prison three times since 1995 in Florida, according to… law and crimefor selling drugs, evading the police and for inflicting violence with a deadly weapon.
He was arrested and later released on $41,000 bail.
It remains unclear whether Randall has a lawyer representing him on his behalf.
He is expected to appear in court for the first time on July 15 in connection with the shooting.
