A three-year-old boy was heartbroken after his dog ate his butterfly he raised from a caterpillar.

Seconds after the boy from Rotherham, South Yorkshire, released the butterfly into his garden, the family’s Cavalier King Charles chased it and ate it.

Ronnie Seddon, three, grew the caterpillar in a plastic box for several days before it turned into a white butterfly and his father Danny, 25, decided to film the sweet moment.

In the clip, Ronnie opens the lid of the container the butterfly has hatched in and you can see it flying around inside.

He turns it upside down and begins to shake it to release the insect he named Ralph into the wild.

It lands on the ground in the yard and soon realizes it’s free and flutters off into the grassy yard.

But the family dog, named Marvel, soon spots the butterfly and instinctively tries to catch it.

He sees it and with one bite catches it in his mouth, swallowing it whole – much to Ronnie’s chagrin.

Danny decided to share the comedic moment, which he captured on Tuesday, on social media and the video has proved hugely popular ever since.

Danny said, “Unfortunately I stopped recording because Ronnie got upset. He is three years old and has been talking about his butterfly Ralph all day now.

“We bred him from a caterpillar and decided it was time to release him when our dog decided otherwise.

He explained that their dog is “very cheeky” and often causes trouble in their home.
