Borussia Dortmund have confirmed that coach Edin Terzic has left the club of his own free will.

The news comes in the wake of reports that Terzic was allegedly involved in a heated confrontation with Mats Hummels ahead of the Champions League final.

A Dortmund statement on Thursday said: “Borussia Dortmund and coach Edin Terzic are going their separate ways.

“The 41-year-old, who won the DFB Cup with BVB in 2021, was runner-up in 2023 and reached the Champions League final in 2024, asked BVB to terminate his contract immediately. Borussia Dortmund accepted the request after a joint discussion.

In a message to fans, Terzic said: “Dear Borussia fans, although it hurts me a lot now, I would like to tell you that today I will be leaving BVB. It was a great honor to be able to lead this great club to victory in the DFB Cup and, most recently, to the Champions League final.

“I asked those responsible for a meeting after our final at Wembley, because after ten years at BVB, including five years as coach and two and a half years as coach,

‘I think the next new beginning should be accompanied by a new man on the sidelines. Everyone who knows me knows that during this decision-making process over the past few weeks, two hearts have been beating in my chest.

‘But even after intense discussions, my basic feeling has not changed. I always wish Borussia Dortmund the best and I don’t say goodbye, but we’ll see you again. Hello, BVB!’

Dortmund beat the odds to reach the biggest game in club football, but fell short against Real Madrid at Wembley.

Days before the match, Hummels, somewhat surprisingly, came out to harshly criticize his coach’s tactics during their disappointing Bundesliga campaign.

According to Bild, Terzic became enraged by Hummels’ comments and the confrontation between the two became violent and “so heated that the club discussed the personal consequences.”

They were ‘forced to make peace’ to focus on the Champions League final, but Terzic offered to walk away from the club, as reported Sky Germany.

Dortmund finished fifth in 2023-24, and veteran centre-back Hummels did not like how the team approached their games against those above them in the table.

He told Bild: “I was furious because I thought Borussia Dortmund shouldn’t play like that, against any opponent in the world.”

‘I didn’t think this could go on like this. I felt insulted to my honor for being on the field with that kit. So submissive, so inferior in football terms. The two games in Stuttgart and the away game in Leverkusen. “That was a barricade with 11 men in the box.”

Terzic was furious with Hummels’ criticism and Bild claimed it was “guaranteed” that one of the two would leave the club this summer.

Hummels is in the middle of his second spell at Dortmund and last season was his 14th with the club.

He will not participate in Euro 2024 as he is left out of the German team.

“I can understand the idea that a group has been growing since March,” Hummels told Bild. “It is bitter for me as an individual, because I am currently one of the five best defenders in Germany,” he said. “I have the confidence in myself to say that.”

It was said that defender Hummels would only be willing to stay at the club if Terzic leaves this summer.

When asked about the reasons for his omission, Hummels said: “If I understood him (Nagelsmann) correctly, it was more about age-related issues, such as physical condition.”

“If I had had a phase like the one I had recently before (the friendly matches in) March, maybe I would have been called up (and) also for the Euro Cup team.”
