Gemma is looking for a self-assured, empathetic food lover. He won't be selfish or obsessed with the gym.

Every week, FEMAIL asks two singles to report on their blind date.

This week, it’s the turn of Gemma, 28, and Tom, 26. Did sparks fly or was it time to grab a cab?

Gemma, 28 years old

Single for two years, no children.

Current role: Mental health worker.

Would like meet up: A foodie, self-confident and empathetic. He won’t be selfish, gym-obsessed or business-minded.

Dating people from the past

I’ve spent most of my 20s traveling, so I haven’t had a significant relationship yet.

Eventually, I’d like to be a mother and wife, but I don’t dare put a time frame on it. My mother would like me to settle down, although there’s no talk of having grandchildren… yet.

Pre-date jitters?

I like meeting new people, it’s part of my job so it’s not stressful for me.

First impressions?

I was already seated at our table when Tom arrived. He is about the same height as me. How to describe him? I couldn’t tell you what he was wearing, but he has blonde hair. His first sentence was warm: “This is a fun situation.” He seemed smart, friendly and polite.

Easy to talk to?

Yes, although I was tired because I had to get up early to catch the train. We talked about work and Tom told me about his job creating video content for a PR firm. I spoke openly about my love life, which is probably not the best thing to do on a date.

Tom’s last relationship was two or three years ago (I think). I told Tom about my travels to Southeast Asia. He would like to go there too, but long trips are not an option due to his job.

He is very observant and noticed that I am missing a pinky finger on one hand. Most men don’t notice, unlike Tom.

Embarrassing moments?

Not really. It takes a lot to embarrass me.

Did sparks fly?

No, after eating we went out for a drink, but we got along more like brothers.

Tom is a good conversationalist and can tell stories as well as I can, but I have no idea if he liked me because I wasn’t flirting with him.

Do you see it again?

Probably not. He’s from posh Cheltenham and I don’t usually hang out with southerners. I prefer hanging out with people from Manchester, because with them you know where you are. We do follow each other on Instagram though.

What do you think he thought of you?

I talk a lot. I’m a very strong person and on a date, I talk too much. I probably talked too much about past relationships.

Would your family and friends like it?

Yes, because Tom is polite. For example, not only did he have no problem with me taking an early train home from the pub, but he even went with me to buy a sandwich for the return journey.

GEMMA’S VERDICT: 7/10

APPRECIATED? Tom is not hard work.

REGRETS? No regrets.

COFFEE OR TAXI? Cab.

TOM, 26

Single for two years, no children.

Current role: Video producer.

Would you like to meet: An ambitious, fun-loving girl who doesn’t take life too seriously. She won’t be accepted if she cares too much about money and status.

Tom's ideal date is a woman who is ambitious, fun, and doesn't take life too seriously.

Past quotes

I’ve had a couple of serious relationships, but the last one ended two years ago. Most of my friends are also single.

Pre-date jitters?

Yes, but I was more worried about saying something “out of line” since I’m known for having no filter.

First impressions?

I don’t want to sound awful, but I wasn’t expecting Gemma to be from Manchester, so her accent threw me off. I don’t care, it was different. Physically, Gemma is attractive, she has long blonde hair and was wearing a really cool white dress.

Easy to talk to?

Gemma is sarcastic, which I liked. She expressed relief at meeting me. She had rejected another potential candidate because he said he liked Lego. I like it too, but I wouldn’t put it in my bio.

Gemma is a social worker who has worked in both men’s and women’s prisons, while I’m a crime addict, so I had to stop myself from asking her about the cases. Gemma yawned during the appointment and told me she was tired because she was so busy. She needs more sleep.

Embarrassing moments?

I noticed that she doesn’t have a pinky finger on one hand. I wasn’t sure if it was the right thing to do to ask her, “Where’s your finger?” But she congratulated me for being observant and explained that she had lost it when she was a child, after falling through a glass table.

Did sparks fly?

We got on well, but there was no sexual vibe. If I have those feelings of “this could be the person who gives birth to my children,” then I tend to be a little bit more quiet. But I was confident with Gemma because I didn’t care about the outcome.

At the bar, she told me about her two “casual relationships.” The date turned into a therapy session, and I told her to cut out toxic guys.

Do you see her again?

No, and I know Gemma would say the same. We hugged goodbye and she knows where to find me if she needs advice about her love life.

What do you think he thought of you?

I’m a bit of a cheapskate. At first she was relieved that I wasn’t playing with Lego, but she soon downgraded me to the category of dull. I suspect she thinks I can’t handle her.

Would your family and friends like it?

My family were initially skeptical. I called my mother and told her that Gemma has a deeper voice than I do. However, she would like Gemma because she is very funny, like the late Caroline Aherne.

TOM’S VERDICT: 8/10

APPRECIATED? Gemma was clearly herself.

REGRETS? To be honest, no.

COFFEE OR TAXI? Coffee.
