Last month, lead singles Texas Hold ‘Em and 16 Carriages were huge hits on streaming… but weren’t getting airplay on country radio stations across the country.

An Oklahoma radio station, KYKC, came under fire when an email sent to a listener went viral after they claimed they refused to play Beyonce’s songs…then changed course and claimed they didn’t realize that Beyonce was releasing country songs.

While Texas Hold ‘Em and 16 Carriages were immediate streaming hits, Billboard reported that only eight of the 150 country stations reporting to Billboard had played Texas Hold ‘Em.

Still, that didn’t stop Bey from becoming the first black woman in history to top Billboard’s Hot Country Songs charts with Texas Hold ‘Em.

Tina defended her daughter making a country album in a recent Instagram post, clarifying that they have always respected “cowboy culture” while living in Texas.

‘We have always celebrated cowboy culture growing up in Texas. “We also always understood that it wasn’t just about belonging solely to white culture,” he began.

‘In Texas there is a huge black cowboy culture. Why do you think my children have integrated it into their fashion and art from the beginning? he asked.

‘When people ask why Beyonce wears cowboy hats? “It’s so funny, I actually laugh because she’s been there since she was a little girl, we went to rodeos every year and my whole family dressed in Western fashion,” she said.

Tina added that Bey’s sister ‘Solange made a completely brilliant album and project based on black cowboy culture. She was definitely part of our culture growing up.”

The reviews have already been quite positive, including Page six Critic Nicholas Hautman, whose first line of the review is: “Country music is on life support.”

He adds that Cowboy Carter is “the revival country music so desperately needed,” calling the 27-track album “instantly timeless.”

The review adds that Cowboy Carter is a “poignant celebration of Southern values and the genre’s African-American roots,” adding that the singer stated that she recorded the album after feeling “unwelcome” while presenting at the 2016 CMA Awards.

One of the most anticipated tracks is Bey’s cover of Dolly Parton’s 1973 classic Jolene, which features Parton herself attacking the now infamous ‘Becky with the good hair’ before the track.
