Ben Ainslie pushed one race closer to victory at the America’s Cup on Saturday after overcoming a major technical problem to secure his place in next month’s final qualifying game.
The skipper of the British Ineos Team UK went past the Italian boat Luna Rossa in what Ainslie called one of the most ‘amazing’ races he had ever competed in.
And the Auckland victory was all the more remarkable as an important piece of equipment, the Cunningham – which changes the shape of the sail – had broken, while a final leg collision had just been averted.

Ainslie will now face American Magic or Luna Rossa in the Challenger Series Final to decide who will face Team New Zealand for the America’s Cup in March.
“It was one of the most fantastic races I ever competed in,” said Ainslie.
