Beloved Australian actress Barbara ‘Babs’ Wheelton has died aged 93, after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.

The veteran actress was born in London in 1931 and later moved to Australia, where she appeared in several iconic television shows in the 1960s and 1970s.

Wheelton’s family confirmed his death on Monday in a heartbreaking obituary published in The Age.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Barbara (Babs) Wheelton on Sunday, August 18, 2024,” they began.

‘Much loved by her family, her spouses, partners and all her extended family and dear friends.

‘In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Fight Parkinson’s Victoria.’

The energetic performer was known to viewers for playing three different characters in the legendary Australian drama Prisoner.

He also appeared in popular Australian television shows The Sullivans, Cop Shop and Homicide.

Throughout his celebrated career, Wheelton worked alongside many iconic Australian artists including Charles “Bud” Tingwell, Michael Caton and Noni Hazlehurst.

The English-born star also appeared in many radio dramas and was a published short story writer.

He had his own website where he spoke openly about his career.

Wheelton is survived by his children Simon, Stephanie and Paul, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

His funeral was held in Melbourne on Monday, followed by a private cremation.
