Barbie’s iconic flip phone becomes a reality! HMD unveils a bright pink smartphone that will go on sale this summer

Last summer, Barbie mania spread around the world following the release of Greta Gerwig’s hit movie.

From Barbie-themed cheeseburgers to bright pink Xbox gaming consoles, the world truly turned pink when the blockbuster took the box office by storm.

Now, Human Mobile Devices (HMD) has jumped on the bandwagon, albeit a few months behind Barbie’s peak.

The tech giant has joined forces with Mattel to make Barbie’s iconic flip phone a reality.

Luckily, there’s not long to wait before you can get your hands on it, as the Barbie Flip Phone is arriving in summer 2024.

The new Barbie Flip Phone was announced at the Mobile World Congress, which kicked off in Barcelona this week.

‘Is it time to trade reel life for real life and take a break from all the notification interruptions?’ said Lars Silberbauer, marketing director at Human Mobile Devices.

“We are thrilled to partner with Mattel, a company that shares our commitment to meaningful innovation and social change.”

The smartphone appears to feature a retro design and “promises to embody the vintage elegance of the original female empowerment brand,” according to HMD.

However, the tech giant is staying mum on other features, including the price.

“At the heart of Mattel are design and innovation, and this latest collaboration is another step forward in that direction,” said Mattel EMEA Director of Consumer Products, Publishing and LBE, Ruth Henriquez.

“The launch of Barbie x HMD promises to be an exciting time for Barbie fans of all ages; we’re excited to flip the switch and introduce it to the world at Mobile World Congress.”

The only images HMD has released so far are photos of Barbie’s toy phone and a blurry image of four pixelated devices.

Despite the lack of information, Barbie fans have flocked to X (formerly Twitter) to talk about their excitement.

“Wow, I love how HMD is catering to both the nostalgic and the tech-savvy with these products,” one user tweeted.

Another added: ‘That sounds so retro and fun! I can’t wait to see the Barbie phone in action. Childhood nostalgia comes to life!’

And one joked: ‘A Barbie flip phone? That’s a blast from the past! I can’t wait to see the design.
