Avatar: The Way of Water will turn Sigourney Weaver into a new Na’vi

Although Dr. Grace Augustine of Sigourney Weaver finally died in the first Avatar movie, one of the first surprising details director James Cameron shared about the film’s sequel, Avatar: The way of the water, was that Weaver would return as a mysterious new character. While Avatar‘s story of symbiotic aliens could have potentially led to Dr. Augustine in an imaginative way, turns out The way of the water‘s take a much more surprising approach to bringing Weaver back into the franchise.

Avatar: The way of the waterThe first trailer revealed that the story would focus on the blended family that former human Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and the Na’vi Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) started after the original film. As surprising as it was to see that Jake and Neytiri had seemingly adopted a human child, in a recent interview with Empire magazineCameron shared more details about the couple’s other child, Kiri, which may indicate that she is the more intriguing of the two siblings.

Despite Kiri being a teenager, Cameron revealed that Weaver will be playing the character and that the 72-year-old actress had “all kinds of fun” working with real teenage girls to get a sense of what kind of person she is.

“Sigourney just got younger,” Cameron said of Weaver’s performance on set. “She looked younger, she had more energy and she never completely stepped out of Kiri during our entire recording period. She had a glow on her face and lightness in her step and a cheerful spirit.

Interestingly, Cameron also shared that Kiri has been adopted, which means there may be some some sort of connection between her and Dr. Augustine, except they are played by the same actress. Weaver didn’t share much about her new character, but she described being able to step into Kiri’s puberty with familiarity by remembering how uncomfortable she herself was at that age.

“I had a strong feeling that Kiri would often feel uncomfortable,” Weaver said. ‘She’s looking for who she is. I loved getting that challenge from Jim.”

Avatar: The way of the water opens in theaters on December 16.
