Aussie UFC star Alex Volkanovski defeats Brian Ortega to reclaim featherweight title at UFC266

Aussie UFC star Alex Volkanovski escapes two entries to defeat Brian Ortega and reclaim the featherweight championship in the classic at UFC266

Aussie MMA star Alex Volkanovski has retained his UFC featherweight title with a dominant win over Brian Ortega – the 20th straight win of his career.

The small fighter from Shellharbour on the south coast of NSW headlined UFC266 against his Ultimate Fighter rival in a Covid rescheduled fight set to take place in March.

Twice the little Aussie fought his way out of two entries that would have won the most fights before unleashing a furious and brutal barrage of attacks on the American.

Volkanovski couldn’t finish Ortega with the bloodied fighters thrusting to the very end in one of the greatest fights in recent memory.

“Everyone in Australia, I know you’re having a hard time, this is for you,” he said after the fight.

Ortega, who was a judge on the UFC’s Ultimate Fighter series against Volkanovski, hadn’t lost love for the little Aussie before the fight, but was full of respect for him afterward.

“That little bastard is a tough man, I thought I had him, but nothing but respect,” Ortega said of Volkanovski.

The pair, who had to be separated after the second round bell rang, left the ring arm in arm and smiled after the fight which has been called one of the best fights ever.
