Apple is said to be distributing iOS 17 to fewer iPhones and iPads

Date:

With a view to this year’s WWDC developer conference, Apple will most likely present the new versions iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 to the public and release them for developers a little later.

While many iPhone and iPad owners are looking forward to the upcoming major version upgrade, users with an old model may look down the drain. Now the iPhone 8, 8 Plus and iPhone X are in the rumor mill.

Apple devices between 2015 and 2017 supposedly won’t get an update to iOS 17, or will they?

There are rumors circulating online about the upcoming update to iOS 17. Specifically, the following iPhones and iPads should no longer be considered for the new version in autumn:

  • iPhone 8
  • iPhone 8Plus
  • iPhone X
  • iPad Pro 9.7 1st Gen
  • 1st Gen iPad Pro
  • iPad 5 (A9)

International colleagues refer to one Twitter postthe content of which is only visible to a limited group of users.

It is suspected that this step by Apple is related to a security hole that makes it possible to »jailbreak« the affected devices. This gap can probably not be fixed with an update.

Meanwhile reports in the Forum of the MacRumors website a user to speak. Specifically, it is the well-known leaker who recently revealed further details about the new side buttons and the action button.

According to the user, “All devices that support iOS 16 will receive iOS 17, including all A11 chipsets.” Accordingly, the above iPhone models would receive the update.

In the past, the user revealed specific information about the Dynamic Island in the iPhone 14 Pro – and was apparently right. The user “anonymous-AS” is said to be in contact with an Apple employee who is part of the research team.

Updates from Apple: We classify

anticipation: It remains to be seen whether the iPhone and iPad models will actually not be considered for iOS 17. We may find out more details about the manufacturer’s plans on June 5th at the developer conference.

To date, Apple has not given any guarantee as to how long the devices will be supplied with updates. If we go by the previous update cycle, many iPhone series have received five additional versions.

The iPhone 6s, 6s Plus and the SE model from 2015 even received six more iOS updates. This is also evident from Statista’s Twitter post:

In the past, older models have often received longer updates, but have been significantly slimmed down. New and computationally intensive functions were mainly reserved for more recent models.

For example, selected Apple tablets have the new multitasking tool “Stage Manager”, primarily with the powerful M1 or M2 processor. The available features of Stage Manager have also further differentiated among these iPads.

So it’s very possible that the Cupertino-based manufacturer will embark on this path again in 2023, adding fewer features to the above models as part of the update.

We think it is conceivable that iOS 17 will end up on the iPhone 8, 8 Plus and iPhone X. We also think it is possible that Apple will restrict the user group again and older models will be left out.

Basically, it most likely depends on the scope of the update and what (bigger) features we can look forward to.

iPhone 15: Release, prices, features – all information & rumours

In the past, Apple rarely followed a strict path from which they never deviated – at least as far as updates are concerned. Do you call one of the models mentioned your own or are you still satisfied with an older iPhone or iPad? Do you think it is conceivable that the above models will not receive iOS 17?
