Vice President Kamala Harris broke with President Biden to call for “an immediate ceasefire” in Gaza.

His comments came during a speech in Selma, Alabama, on Sunday.

“Given the immense magnitude of the suffering in Gaza, there must be an immediate ceasefire for at least the next six weeks, which is what is on the table,” he said.

“This will allow us to get the hostages out and get a significant amount of help.

“This will allow us to build something more lasting to ensure Israel is safe and respect the Palestinian people’s right to dignity, freedom and self-determination.”

His comments mark a marked departure from the more cautious approach favored by President Biden, as he struggles to strike a balance between the United States’ role as an ally of Israel and growing international outrage over its bombing of Gaza.

It is estimated that around 30,000 Palestinians have been killed in retaliatory airstrikes since October 7, when Hamas first attacked Israel, killing 1,139.
