Andy Murray has revealed that he was “angry and upset” when he first learned last month that his mother had been sexually assaulted in 2014.

Judy Murray, 62, said in an interview with the Sunday Post last month that a drunken man had his hands down her pants during a function eight years ago, leaving her “sick in the stomach” and “disgusted”.

When he first spoke about the incident, Andy revealed it was the first time he’d heard of it, and older brother Jamie already knew about it.

In an interview with Bloomberg, the two-time Wimbledon champion said such incidents were “a familiar story to many women.”

He said: ‘My mother messaged me at the time to let me know that there was an article about it, and I was really mad at her.

“I was pretty angry, but I wasn’t sure what to say either. I messaged my mom, I called her the next day to talk to her to make sure she was okay. That kind of behavior should not be tolerated anywhere.’

Murray, 35, is expected to win his fitness battle with an abs problem to play at Wimbledon next week, and he believes he can contribute to his 2013 and 2016 triumphs.

“That’s part of the motivation to still compete,” he said.

“I know it’s going to be incredibly difficult, of course, but I still believe I have great tennis in me.

“I know it’s going to be even harder to win Wimbledon than it was five or six years ago. But I still believe, and I’m still working and training as hard as I can to reach that goal.”

Murray missed Queen’s due to his latest injury, but will be one of the dangerous unseeded floats at Wimbledon in this morning’s draw.

He will not have to meet any Russians or Belarusians after they were controversially banned from the tournament in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and he said their omission is understandable.

“Whether some tennis players are unable to play in an event or not, and whether ranking points are offered, in the grand scheme of things, doesn’t matter,” he said.

“I know some Russian players and I’m friends with them, and I feel for them that they can’t compete. I can understand it may seem unfair to them, but I see the Wimbledon side. It’s very complex, but at the end there’s a war going on.’
