An Australian man accused of rape has been arrested in Thailand after allegedly fleeing Australia while facing charges.

Helio Taiyang Richardson, 62, was arrested at a resort on the idyllic island of Koh Phangan in the south-east of the country.

Thai police shared video footage of the moment Richardson was arrested and paraded before the media.

Richardson, a physical therapist, was charged with rape in Queensland in 2018.

He is said to have left Australia before court proceedings began in 2022.

He has since been extradited to Sydney and will travel back to Queensland from there.

Queensland police confirmed they were working with Thai authorities to extradite a 62-year-old man.
