Number one draft pick Harley Reid destroyed Fremantle in the Western derby and then took a lighthearted swipe at AFL great David Mundy for giving him just one vote for the Glendinning-Allan Medal.
Reid scored three goals with 19 disposals, seven clearances and two contested marks in West Coast’s impressive 16.9 (105) to 10.8 (68) victory over Fremantle on Saturday.
The 37-point win followed his fine display in the 39-point win over Richmond, when Reid racked up 27 disposals, seven clearances and a goal.
Reid is the most hyped number one draft pick in AFL history, and he’s truly living up to his hype.
However, Elliot Yeo overshadowed the 19-year-old for the Glendinning-Allan Medal, and took notice of the votes.
Harley Reid continued an incredible start to his football career, playing a starring role as the West Coast Eagles defeated Fremantle.
While being interviewed after the game on 6PR, Reid took aim at Dockers great David Mundy.
“I don’t think Mundy will like me for giving me one,” Reid smiled.
The commentary room erupted in laughter before Mundy responded to Reid.
“Well, if I could touch the ball in the first 10 minutes, maybe I’d give it a little more,” Mundy joked.
West Coast coach Adam Simpson says Reid is already exceeding the club’s expectations.
“We love what Harley is doing and our internal expectations are not what he is producing; they (his performances) are much higher,” Simpson said.
‘They’re probably just meeting expectations publicly. So I’m very careful not to overdo it, because she’s 19 years old. It’s hard to maintain that when you get to the AFL.
‘As long as he keeps doing it. I think we should all enjoy it, but let’s not worry too much if he has a bad day.
“Today… he kicked three and really energized the crowd and the players, but we don’t expect that every week.”

Reid’s growing popularity is on track to rival that of Nic Naitanui and Ben Cousins in their heyday – not that the Victorian is letting popularity go to his head.
“I’m sure Harley will be the first to say it’s not about him,” Simpson said.
‘It’s about all of us. I think we all enjoy the fact that he contributes the way he does.
“But I’m sure he doesn’t want us to say it’s about him, even though he’s a very good player and he’s helped us.”
The injection of youth has helped energize the west coast.
But their veterans are also performing at a high level, with the likes of Elliot Yeo, Tim Kelly, Tom Barrass, Jeremy McGovern and Liam Duggan all performing solidly.
Simpson is pleased with his team’s return from last year’s wooden spoon campaign, but says they are “nowhere near” the finished product.
“I tried hard to tell our players that we don’t (want to) rely on Jake (Waterman) to punt five or Elliot to have 15 punts,” Simpson said.
“I guess we just want good team football.”
West Coast will look to claim their third successive win when they take on Gold Coast at the People First Stadium on Sunday.
