ABBA after their Eurovision victory in Brighton in 1974
It comes hours after ABBA thanked their fans in a rare statement as the band celebrated the 50th anniversary of their Eurovision Song Contest victory.
The iconic 1970s pop group, consisting of Bjorn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, Agnetha Faltskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad, remain the show’s most famous and successful export after they were crowned winners in April 1974 with their song Waterloo.
Reflecting on the milestone, the group, which later broke up in 1982, issued a joint statement expressing their gratitude for the fans’ “steadfast loyalty and support over the years.”
To mark the anniversary, several pianos across Europe will simultaneously play a song pre-recorded by Benny to make it sound as if he were playing live.
Sharing a photo of the quartet winning the award, they wrote: “It’s a little dizzying and deeply humbling to think that millions of you who first saw us in the 1974 Eurovision final have passed on our music to not just one generation, but several generations.” .
“We see evidence of that every time one of us visits Abba Voyage in London, and that’s why we can celebrate the 50th anniversary of that event knowing that our songs still resonate around the world.”
They continued: ‘It is It’s hard to fathom that 50 years have passed since the four of us waited backstage for the verdicts of all the juries from across Europe at the Brighton Dome.
‘So what were our dreams during those moments of suspense or in the chaos after the victory we had achieved with the smallest margin in the history of Eurovision?
“Four different dreams, no doubt, but whatever they were, however grandiose, reality has surpassed them, that’s for sure.”
The group went on to have a huge repertoire of hits, including Dancing Queen (1976), Gimme! Give to me! Give to me! (1979) and Super Trouper (1976), to name a few.
