A woman who lent money to her colleague revealed how the simple act of kindness has become an ordeal

A woman who lent money to her colleague has revealed how the simple act of kindness has become an “ongoing” ordeal.

The woman, known only as Kait, revealed that she sent her co-worker $7 and then received an endless stream of direct messages asking for money for taxis, takeout and groceries.

“I made the mistake of lending money to a coworker and now I’ve been asking for money, rides and food non-stop,” he wrote on X, formerly Twitter, along with screenshots of his coworker’s text messages.

“No one in management will do anything about it,” continued Kait, who lives in the United States.

When Kait told him that he only had “$3 to my name” at the moment, his co-worker responded, “Could I have the 3 (dollars) I’m sending you on Saturday plus the 7?”

In a separate case, Kait was allegedly asked to “buy me some food from Wendy’s,” including “the large BLT chicken sandwich with a Dr Pepper.”

Her colleague later sent a text message asking Kait to drop off two liters of soda and “a gallon of whole milk” at her house.

The 25-year-old captioned the screenshot: “While I was at work at 10pm, she asked me to buy her milk and soda then bring them to her house for just $10.”

Kait explained that she had tried to block the number, only to have her coworker message her from a different number or through social media platforms like TikTok.

“To clarify, she has also done this with all of her coworkers,” he continued. ‘They have blocked her and claim that she finds them on other SM (social networks) or texts them on new numbers.

“A regular customer, when they come, asks if they are currently working, and if they are, they leave immediately because they used them for grocery money and never gave them the money back, but kept asking for more rides or more money.”

In one message, her coworker offered Kait food stamps in exchange for a ride back from Wendy’s because it was “too hot” to walk home.

X user Kait recounted the incident in a thread on Wednesday, October 8, and her post racked up more than 10 million views.

‘Start asking them for money. But it’s time for him to arrive just before they ask. Once you’re the one who needs money, they’ll stop,’ one person suggested.

Another added: “Block her and pretend she doesn’t exist at work.” You (probably) won’t get anything back from what you lend them and there is literally no benefit to being nice to a person like this.’

Some noted that Kait was being too polite and advised her to “just say no.”

“Next time just say no flat out and don’t make any excuses as to why,” one person said. “I understand that you’re trying to be polite, but when you make an excuse, you simply open up the opportunity for her to adjust her request and ask again, making it difficult for you mentally to muster up the courage to say no.”

A similar comment read: “Asking someone if you can keep their last $3 is crazy.”

After being inundated with responses, Kait addressed “the people saying it’s my fault” and wrote, “I didn’t think lending someone $7 would turn into this shit.” Obviously I would never have given it then.’

She also summed up her biggest learning from the whole experience: ‘I just need to learn to set boundaries and be smarter about who I help!
