A flight attendant has revealed the secret reason why cabin crew greet customers when they board planes – and it’s not just out of courtesy.
Rania, from Austria, is a flight attendant at Hungarian budget airline Wizz Air.
The professional said cabin crew are asked to greet each passenger so they can assess whether they are fit to fly.
Flying sick or drunk is a health risk because it can cause disruption and affect the safety of everyone on board.
“Did you know that your flight attendant greets you not only out of courtesy, but also to check if you are too drunk or sick to fly?” Rania said.

“It’s also to see who could help us in an emergency.”
Crew members are trained to look for ABP (healthy people).
ABPs are those who, ideally, travel alone, have no mobility problems, can speak English (or the local language) and appear fit enough to be able to open emergency doors.
Many passengers shared their surprise at the news.
‘I knew (they) were judging me! But I thought it was to see if it looked like a security threat,” one man said.
“That’s why everyone looks straight into my soul as soon as I step foot on the plane,” another noted.
“I always tell them (cabin crew) that I am a nurse, they are very grateful for that,” added one woman.
