A British tourist has drowned while on holiday with his wife in Menorca.

The 70-year-old man was taking a dip at Son Bou beach, the longest on the island, on its southern coast, when the tragic incident occurred.

Other swimmers saw him in difficulty and ran into the water to try to help him while others called 999.

Emergency medical services spent more than half an hour trying to revive him when they arrived at the scene, but were unable to save him.

Local reports said the unnamed tourist’s wife had been with him at the time, but remained on shore while he headed out to sea.

It is understood they traveled to Menorca to celebrate his birthday.

They were staying in a property in an urbanization in Sant Lluís, a short drive from the beach where the tragedy occurred.

Local reports said an autopsy confirmed the cause of death was drowning.

The incident occurred around 5pm on Monday, but the man’s nationality has just been made public.

Son Bou beach is about two kilometers long and is a benchmark on the island for its clean, crystalline waters and white sand.

In October 2022, a British man drowned in a private pool in Menorca.

A maintenance employee reportedly discovered his body floating in the water.

The 64-year-old Briton is said to have owned the property where he was found dead.
