‘I have no idea how much time I have left but whatever it is, I want to make a difference to people. If I accidentally hasten my demise in the process, it’s a risk I’m willing to take. I’ve almost died, what could be harder than that?

The owners of the much-loved village pub decided to close the business during lockdown and Martin bought it in 2022 as he felt the community had “lost its heart”.

He didn’t even tell his wife Kirsty, to whom he has been married since 2010, his plans.

Since then, the broadcaster has been happy to see the change in the troubled children who asked to help with their project after difficult times, and the young people obtained qualifications for their work.

Martin said: “I’ve had parents call me asking what we’ve done to their children because they don’t recognize them anymore.”

‘Just because they are given a chance, they become more engaged and encouraged, and their families are seeing that.

‘One child stopped using drugs and another realized that he is not stupid because he does not know algebra or geography. Seeing the positive change they are making by working at the hotel is what really motivates me. Shows what kindness can do.’

Martin previously said the renovation project was “the most worrying” yet and decided not to tell his wife Kirsty about his plans so she couldn’t talk him out of it.

In an interview with MirrorHe confessed: ‘I cannot underestimate the mental after-effects of what happened to me.

‘Physical things are overcome, but it is the predominant thought that it could all be over.

‘Everything you tried to do, and your family, you realize it could all disappear.

“They told me I needed to slow down and I took the opposite route.

‘I hope I have many years but you never know.

Everything that happened to me makes you realize how fine a thread we are hanging on.

“But you can’t live life living in that fear.”

What is a pericardial effusion?

Pericardial effusion causes excess fluid to block the sac that surrounds the heart, known as the pericardium.

If the pericardium is diseased or injured, inflammation can cause excess fluid.

Fluid can also build up around the heart without inflammation, such as from bleeding.

Symptoms may include difficulty breathing, chest pains, discomfort when breathing, feeling dizzy, or swelling in the abdomen or legs.

While the condition can be treated with medication, in severe cases doctors may perform surgery to drain excess fluid.
