Sydney striker Patrick Wood has been mocked for making one of the worst misses in football history after firing an open scoring chance from close range.
The 21-year-old started in charge for Sydney in their A-League clash against the Central Coast Mariners on Saturday and was left with his head in his hands after the calamitous mistake.
Sydney already had a 3-0 lead in the first half hour of the match when Wood had a golden chance to give the visitors a four-goal lead in New South Wales, Australia.
A back pass to Central Coast goalkeeper Danny Vukovic was put into Wood’s path by a poor touch which gave the Sydney striker a great opportunity to score with an easy touch.
Wood was just two yards from goal and facing an open net when he took a first touch to set up a shot that should have easily been taken over the line.

Wood was later substituted in the 61st minute of the match after struggling to score.
However, somehow his shot went wide of the post, to the surprise of everyone inside the stadium, including his teammates and opposing players.
The easier finish might have been to hit the ball first with his weaker left foot rather than giving an extra touch and inviting more pressure.
Wood immediately buried his head in his hands at the realization before trudging towards the halfway line as a goal kick resumed play.
The goal commentary on TNT Sports couldn’t believe what had just happened, describing Wood’s surprise by saying: “Oh, and miss, well, anything can and does happen because you’ll never see that again.”
Wood took advantage of his golden opportunity to the surprise of the fans inside the stadium.
“That’s the most amazing young lady, you must be wishing the earth would just swallow you up.”
