Philippe Clement struck on the Dundee State pitch last night after Rangers’ Scottish Premiership match against the Dark Blues was postponed an hour and a half before the midday kick-off.

Heavy overnight rain on Tayside prompted a first inspection of the pitch at 9.15am by local referee Craig Fordyce.

This was followed by a further inspection by match referee Don Robertson at 10.15am, with the surface then deemed unplayable due to a waterlogged area at midway and another in a penalty box .

Dundee’s third home postponement this season means Celtic go into the international break with a one-point lead over Rangers at the top of the table.

Rangers boss Clement said Robertson made the right choice but slammed Dundee over their pitch.

“It’s a really strange thing,” he said. “It will be the only ground in all of the Scottish leagues where a match has been postponed. That tells me it has nothing to do with the weather.

“It rained all over Scotland and there were grounds in the lower leagues where they could play football. There, the ball bounced. But here, the ball didn’t bounce. So clearly there is something wrong.

“Also, there were places on the pitch where they put a lot of sand and there was no stability for the players. It’s really dangerous for injuries.

Dundee chief executive John Nelms defended his club, saying: “We simply ran out of time. If we had a game at 3 p.m., the field would probably be playable.

“No one is to blame. We are doing our best. We recently installed new drains. We did all that stuff.
