Arne Slot refuses to get carried away with Liverpool’s excellent start to their Premier League campaign and has highlighted the difficulties of winning a league title.
Liverpool are top of the tree on Christmas Day, with Slot’s side four points ahead of second-placed Chelsea with a game in hand.
However, Slot is keen to keep his players and Liverpool fans grounded by insisting that a league table cannot be judged until the halfway point.
Slot, speaking in a interview with Sky Sports, said of Liverpool’s title fight: “I’ve always said how difficult it was.” You can see it now. The best way to judge the league standings is after 19 games.
“It is very difficult to win a league anywhere in the world. It is very difficult to win the league. You have to do many things well. That is why there are so many teams and few players who can do it, because it is very difficult.
‘I hope I can continue to be as happy with the work I do. “That was at Feyenoord, since I was there in 2024, and at Liverpool.”
Arne Slot urges caution when talking about Liverpool winning the league title
Liverpool are flying high in the Premier League, but Slot has said it is still early days
The Dutchman is used to spending the Christmas holidays with his family, but this year he will have to get used to the intense Christmas football calendar.
And he adds: ‘It’s different. Yesterday there was a padel tournament that my brother organized and I knew from last season that he was there and then I went to Dubai for 10 days the next day.
“No, I’m here. I’m not going to Dubai because I’m going to referee some Premier League games.”
When asked if it’s hard being away from family, Slot responds, “Yes.” If I said no, it would probably be strange too. There are obvious reasons why we (my wife and I) kept my children and wife in Holland as they are in their last year of school.
‘They have to do their exams, so for us it was not the ideal time to bring them to England. “But in the ideal world you are the manager of Liverpool and you still have your family around you.”
Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk are out of contract this summer
Slot hopes to follow in Jurgen Klopp’s footsteps and win the Premier League title
Slot’s wish for 2025 is to win a trophy and he hopes Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold can help him achieve it.
The key trio can talk to clubs outside the Premier League from January 1 as they are all out of contract in the summer and Slot once again refused to get swept up in speculation.
“I would say it is a special achievement for these three that they have already achieved it (winning the Premier League) in the past. I hope they do this once again.
‘Yes (a trophy would be nice), that’s also why we are in this job. But to earn it there is a long process and therefore you have to do many, many things well and you also have to enjoy that process. That’s what I’ve done for the past year and I hope to do it next year as well.”
