A girl is believed to have died while trying to protect her mother from a late-night knife attack.
Police and paramedics were called to the scene of a fatal assault at a domestic residence in New Ross, County Wexford, Ireland, at around 11.45pm on Sunday night.
Eight-year-old Malikika Al Katib was allegedly stabbed when she realized her mother was being attacked with a knife in their home and tried to help her.
The gunman is believed to have then pointed the gun at the girl and stabbed her at least twice.
She was rushed to Waterford University Hospital, where she died this morning.
A woman and a man (aged 30) are receiving treatment at Wexford University Hospital. Their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
The scene remains cordoned off to the public as detectives continue to investigate.
Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to come forward.
