The great-niece of an 80-year-old Italian woman has been arrested on suspicion of murder, accused of force-feeding her spaghetti in a bid to claim her £400,000 inheritance.
The woman allegedly killed María Basso by giving her the plate after inviting her to lunch, even though she could only eat “baby food,” to make it appear that she had died of natural causes. Corriere della Sera reports.
The victim’s great-niece was detained by the Carabinieri and transferred to the Aci Castello station in Sicily with the support of the military.
Basso, who had no children and remained in the Giovanna Maria Bonomo nursing home in Asiago, worked for a long time abroad before joining the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
He had also served in Tehran, Iran, where he had fled after the Khomeini revolution, an uprising that resulted in the overthrow of the monarchy in 1979, and later in the United States and Australia.

Over a period of two months, the suspect, wanting to take advantage of her great-aunt’s particularly vulnerable status, showed great interest in the assets, which had been destined 15 years ago for a Christian youth education institute in Milan, Corriere della Sera. reports.
The estate was estimated to be worth around £428,000.
The great-niece made several trips to the bank where the elderly woman had the checking account, which aroused suspicion on the part of the director and bank officials, which led them to file a complaint with the Public Ministry.
According to the plan, the suspect would have managed to convince the elderly woman to revoke the general power of attorney granted in favor of her long-time friend, according to the publication.
On December 2, 2022, after spending the night in a hotel in Asiago, Basso was forced to make a long drive to a nursing home in Aci Castello, Sicily.
Basso was not allowed to collect his belongings or notify his loved ones, who had not been informed of his transfer.
Additionally, the suspect had not brought the medications that her great-aunt took daily, even though managers at the facility where she was in care advised her to do so.
Basso’s relatives, concerned about the sudden disappearance of their relative, filed a complaint and a criminal case with the Vicenza prosecutor’s office, which was then sent to the Catania prosecutor’s office for jurisdiction.
According to the plan, on December 9, 2022, the elderly woman would have to sign a public will, according to which the great-niece would be established as the sole heir.
Two days later, the great-niece allegedly took Basso to lunch and forced her to eat the plate of spaghetti that caused her death.
After the prosecutor’s office submitted a request and the investigating judge gave the green light, the suspect was placed under house arrest after being located and handcuffed at her home.
