Jurgen Klopp has admitted he would be “surprised” if “all the big clubs” chased Kylian Mbappe.

Mbappé appears set to finally leave PSG this summer after years of speculation linking him with a move to Real Madrid, a move that looks set to be completed once the summer transfer window opens.

But the striker’s move to Spain is not a foregone conclusion as several teams can still fight for the man who is being dubbed the greatest free agent of all time.

Liverpool have shown interest in the Frenchman in the past and were one of the teams interested in signing him when he left Monaco for PSG in 2017, and he remains at least in the conversation as a possible destination for Mbappé ahead of next season.

Red boss Jurgen Klopp, however, appears to downplay the chances of that happening. Speaking ahead of his team’s match against Brentford this weekend, the German insisted it would be difficult for several clubs to agree a deal for the 25-year-old.

“Obviously I’m not involved in that, but I can tell you that I would be surprised if all the top clubs were,” Klopp said. “For most of the best clubs I know it will be difficult.” Salaries, registration fees.

Klopp will not be at Liverpool next season but is keen to leave the club in good shape as they continue to compete on four fronts this season.

With his Premier League-leading team, he is also in the Carabao Cup final and remains in the FA Cup and Europa League.

He had previously refused to rule out the possibility of Mbappe joining the club, suggesting he could be “surprised” by a deal.

“I can say that I think he is a really good player, but the financial conditions do not suit us at all,” he told Sky Germany in August. ‘I wouldn’t like to ruin the story now, but as far as I know, there’s nothing that can be done.

‘It’s possible that someone else from the club is preparing something and wants to surprise me. That hasn’t happened in the eight years I’ve been here. It would be the first time.
