One to watch this morning: Ben Pattison

Ben Pattison didn’t think he’d get a chance at the Olympics when he was told surgeons would have to remove part of his heart in 2020.

Against all odds, here she is, thanks to the bronze medal in the 800 metres at last year’s World Championships in Budapest.

Only Seb Coe covered the distance faster.

You can watch him in action from 10.55am in the first round of the men’s 100m. What a story!

Great start for Hamish McArthur

I promise he’s not as scared of climbing as he seems here.

Hamish McArthur, 22, from Yorkshire, has gathered a contingent of 14 supporters at his event today and is currently in third place as he battles for a place in the final. He heard he was coming in June. How far can we go?

We also have Toby Roberts in this event and he is currently in seventh place, with the top eight moving on to the final.

Josh Kerr: There is a conflict between Jakob Ingebrigtsen and me

Nobody was paying attention to Cole Hocker last night until he threw cold water on the supposed 1500m duopoly.

Josh Kerr was destined to be the golden boy and, in the end, silver is nothing to be ashamed of. He ran a magnificent race and is now a two-time Olympic medallist. But it is his rivalry with Norwegian rival Jakob Ingebrigtsen that many thought would light up the final.

Now, in the comfort of the Eurosport sofa, Kerr has opened up about their rivalry, revealing there is a “real problem” and what it is that makes him “angry”.

And the first gold medal of the day goes to…

Sign me up for the speed walk. At the rate I’m beating the bums on the streets of London, I’d have a medal in my pocket.

Spain takes the first gold of the day, and I would say that it did so at a canter, but that would be too fast.

Here you can see María Pérez and Álvaro Martín celebrating their victory in the mixed marathon walk relay race. You will never sing that.

Watch: Obstacles are no obstacle for Cindy Sember

By the way, here is Cindy Sember’s race from before. Those who want to overcome obstacles, take note.

After a slow start, the Michigan-born athlete found her groove.

After finishing fourth in the 100m hurdles in Rio in 2016, she is back with a vengeance.

Good start in diving

There are plenty of reasons to be optimistic in the men’s 3m springboard event.

After two attempts, Jack Laugher is in fifth place and Jordan Houlden (pictured) in seventh. Three contestants have jumped three times, so they will of course have a points advantage. The top 12 qualify for the final, so so far so good.

Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix shares a profound message on Instagram

Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix broke down in tears after finishing sixth in the 10m platform and bravely admitted that three years ago she “didn’t want to be alive”.

She is already a heroine to many, as noted by her father, celebrity chef Fred Sirieix, and bronze medallist alongside Lois Toulson.

Now she has shared an emotional message on Instagram. It is a long and deeply felt journey.

Early smiles for Team GB: Cindy Sember feels ‘ready to win a medal’

Cindy Sember finished second in her women’s 100m hurdles heat with a time of 12.72 seconds. A positive start to the day as she is now through to the semi-finals.

“I felt really good. I have a lot more in the tank, but it was good to get the nerves and anxiety out of the way. I’m lucky to be here and I’m happy and healthy,” he told BBC Sport.

“I’m ready to win a medal. I’m capable. With God’s grace I’ll be fine.”
