Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist Canceled By NBC After Two Seasons… But Co-Producer Lionsgate Reveals They Are Planning To Find The Show A New Home

Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist has been canceled from NBC after two seasons.

The network has decided not to renew the comedy-drama series starring Jane Levy and will not proceed with plans to move the show to NBC’s streaming platform Peacock, the BBC said. The Hollywood Reporter,

But there’s hope the show can find a home elsewhere.

A spokesperson for Lionsgate Television announced that the company, which co-produces the series, plans to purchase Zoey’s extraordinary playlist, saying: “In a world where finding a loyal and passionate audience is never easy, we believe there is a should be home for this great, award-winning show with a passionate and dedicated following.”

The series has received critical acclaim, including Outstanding Choreography for Scripted Programming at the Primetime Emmy Awards 2020.

Levy, 31, earned a Golden Globe nomination in 2021 for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical, but lost to Schitt’s Creek star Catherine O’Hara.

However, the show’s ratings had fallen 14 percent since its first season, and season two concluded with a 0.6 rating among the adult demographic aged 18-49.

Lionsgate negotiated with NBC’s parent company NBCUniversal to move the show to Peacock, but the two sides were unable to reach an agreement.

Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist was reportedly expensive to produce and moving the series to Peacock would require additional deals to be struck to deal with the streaming rights.

The show followed Zoey Clarke, a computer programmer who begins to hear the innermost thoughts of those around her in the form of musical numbers after a huge playlist of songs was downloaded into her brain following an earthquake.

It also starred Skylar Austin, Alex Newell, Peter Gallagher, John Clarence Stewart, Mary Steenburgen, Andrew Leeds, Alice Lee, Michael Thomas Grant, Kapil Talwalkar, Lauren Graham and Harvey Guillén.

The show had a devoted fan base and was rated 88 percent fresh among viewers on Rotten Tomatoes.

After the cancellation was announced, creator Austin Winberg posted a Twitter thread urging the cast and fans to save the show.
