“Of course we are inspired by what he did”: Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane greets Pep Guardiola as “the best” coach in the world prior to their first battle line battle at the Bernabeu
- Zinedine Zidane believes that Pep Guardiola is ‘the best’ manager in the world
- They will compete against each other for the first time on Wednesday in a competitive competition
- Zidane says he learned a lot from the Spaniard when he visited Bayern Munich
- The Frenchman will not be able to visit Eden Hazard at the Bernabeu
It may not have gone so well with many Real Madrid fans, but Zinedine Zidane confirmed his belief that Pep Guardiola is the best coach in the world.
Asked why he believes it, Zidane said: ‘Because he has always shown it, first in Barcelona, then in Bayern Munich and then in Manchester City. Who is the best can be debated because there are many [good] but for me it’s coaches.
‘Of course we are inspired by what he did. That motivates us even more. We are not afraid to play against Guardiola or his teams. ”

Zidane was asked about the time he started as a coach and went to work for Guardiola. He was guarded when he pressed on what he could use against his former teacher on Wednesday evening.
Grinning at the investigation, he said: ‘He has given me a lot of advice. He was very genuine with us. But I’m not going to tell you what I can use. I can just tell you it was very interesting. “
It has always been a community of mutual appreciation and as players it was very Guardiola who stumbled over Zidane.
In an autobiography from 2001 he wrote with Diario Sport journalists Lu Martin and Miguel Rico, Guardiola devoted a chapter to the brilliance of the then Juventus midfielder.
“He plays football like I’ve never seen anyone play,” he wrote. ‘I am annoyed by the type of player who always dribbles when he has to pass or passes when he has to shoot. It is what happens to most of us players, but Zidane always makes the right decision. “
Zidane said that Real Madrid is motivated to play against a team managed by Pep Guardiola
He was even more impressed when he faced Euro 2000 versus Spain versus France. “How could someone who imposes so physically be so technically good?” he wrote and admitted that it was Zidane he wanted to trade with shirts at the end of the game.
Asked on Tuesday night if there was fear against the face of Guardiola, Zidane added, “There is no fear, but what he has achieved is inspiring.”
Real Madrid and Manchester City will compete on Wednesday-evening in the first leg of their much-anticipated final-16 draw in the Bernabeu.
It is the first time that Zidane and Guardiola are competing on the touchline in a competitive game.
Real will be without Eden Hazard for the game after he broke his ankle at the weekend.
Eden Hazard does not play a role on Wednesday evening after sustaining another injury last week
Scans after the defeat at Levante confirmed that he had sustained a hairline fracture on his right ankle, which is a huge blow after his injuries so far this season.
There are fears that he could now miss the rest of the season and when asked if this was the case, Zidane could not give a definitive answer.
‘I can not tell you. It’s hard to say, “Zidane said during a press conference prior to the first Champions League match on Wednesday 16 against City.
“We don’t know if he will be operated on, but he is clearly not happy.
“He had been out for almost three months and then played two games and was injured.
“It is obviously very bad news for him, but I cannot tell you if he will be back before the season is over.”
