Zara McDermott revealed a man ‘spat at’ her while Christmas shopping in a ‘vile’ unprovoked attack on Tuesday.

The Love Island star turned documentary filmmaker, 28, took to her Instagram Story moments after the incident occurred to share what happened with her two million followers.

She was standing outside a Lidl store with her brother’s girlfriend Alice as she recalled the sickening act.

Zara explained: ‘Guys, Alice and I are really shocked by what just happened. We were getting some last minute Christmas stuff as we walked down the street.

‘Normal, normal things and this guy out of nowhere runs up to us and spits on us. Fortunately, it failed due to the wind and then drifted away in the other direction. I can’t believe it.’

She wrote on the screen: ‘No, I’m in shock!!! What’s wrong with people? along with a crying emoji.

Zara later posted a screenshot of a DM from one of her followers, which read: ‘Misogony! How festive!’

The influencer wrote on the screen: ‘Merry Christmas!!! I’m still a little shocked that someone could do that… I think I would have been really shocked if I was alone!

‘Luckily I was with Alice! I received so many messages from other people who had experienced the same thing in London.

She added: ‘I have heard of men approaching women on the street and also punching them in the face (this happened to a friend of mine). It’s completely vile!’

The shocking attack came just after Zara revealed she would be spending Christmas Day away from her boyfriend Sam Thompson as she took to Instagram to inform her followers she was returning to Essex to celebrate.

The former Love Islander wrote: ‘I’m heading back to Essex for Christmas to spend some much-needed downtime with my family. I really wanted to spend Christmas with them.

“I know I’m 28 now and my brother is 24, but we still have the same Christmas traditions that we do every Christmas that haven’t changed since we were little.”

She added: ‘I’m not ready to give that up yet (or ever). There’s nothing more magical than waking up in your childhood home and enjoying a little festive magic with your family.’

Turning to her cats, she joked: ‘Bye babies, see you in a few days! Dad will take good care of you.
