Zack Snyder shares his theory behind the ‘Knightmare’ scene in his Justice League finale

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Zack Snyder’s Justice League.

Zack Snyder recently opened up about the much-discussed Knightmare scene from his version of the 2021 Justice League movie.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League, the remastered four-hour remake of 2017’s Justice League, ended with a closing scene featuring Ben Affleck’s Batman and Jared Leto’s Joker. The epilogue, known as the Knightmare scene, shows a future in a devastated world where Darkseid rules the Earth and Superman goes insane after Lois Lane’s death. To try and defeat Superman, Batman teams up with Cyborg, Flash, Mera, Deathstroke, and of course, the Joker.

Seeing Batman team up with his most famous enemy was a surprising sight for fans, sparking a lot of curiosity as to what the future holds for the series. Snyder recently addressed the topic during a panel discussion at SnyderCon 2023, saying that this collaboration was going to deal with finding kryptonite shards to kill Superman.

Where the director said according to CBR: “Our theory is that[the Joker]is the one who knows where the Kryptonite is, what fragments of Kryptonite are there. He has that information… He basically made a deal with Batman. ‘Don’t kill me and I’ll show you. I’ll get you a tool to fight Superman.'” Batman) is stuck with him…if he kills him or gets rid of him, he hurts himself.”

Although Snyder’s theory makes a lot of sense, we likely won’t see these events come to fruition in DC’s future. With James Gunn and Peter Safran taking over the reins of DC Studios in October, the duo hatched a plan for a complete reboot of DC’s stories. That means new superheroes, new actors, and no Zack Snyder… for now.

Even though the Snyderverse has come to an end, the director is on good terms with Gunn. Gunn revealed in February of this year that Snyder seemed happy with Gunn’s choices for the new DC universe.

Gunn and Safran’s roadmap to the DC universe begins with Superman: Legacy, which will introduce a new actor as Superman.
