A young man who died alongside his girlfriend in a violent accident in a luxurious Melbourne suburb has been remembered by his loved ones, as the couple’s final moments were revealed.

Marcus Watson, 20, was driving his parents’ BMW when he lost control while rounding a bend in Toorak and went onto the pavement at around 8pm on Thursday night.

The car then crashed into a tree before exploding into flames, while shocked neighbors rushed to the scene after hearing screams coming from the burning vehicle.

Little could be done to save Mr Watson and his 22-year-old passenger, who died at the scene. The Berwick woman has not yet been named.

Security cameras from a nearby home showed the BMW speeding down the street moments before the crash, followed by an emergency vehicle with flashing lights minutes later.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident continue.

It comes as police launched a road safety campaign ahead of the state’s long weekend.

“It’s overwhelming, this is a tragedy that was totally avoidable,” Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner David Fitzpatrick said.

“Now there are two families who are planning funerals instead of enjoying the long weekend.”

The double fatality raised the number of fatalities on the state’s roads to 50 so far in 2024.
