A young mother has sparked a heated debate over pay growth after revealing she was “doing nothing” for $60,000 a year.
Financial influencer Alice Raspin, 28, declared that salaries that don’t match inflation will be “out” by 2025 and urged others to re-evaluate their value.
Australian Bureau of Statistics data found that in the year to June 2024, the consumer price index rose 3.8 per cent and the wage price index rose 4.1 per cent, meaning real wage growth was just 0.3 percent.
Many Australians have struggled to stay afloat amid the cost of living crisis and Raspin says the average salary it once was is no longer sustainable.
“I’m sorry, but I won’t do anything for $60,000 a year,” he said in a TikTok video posted Monday.
‘As I am 28 years old and live in the capital with a son, I have to pay the rent and we are saving to buy a house.
‘How do people expect to compensate someone 75 hours a fortnight for $60,000?
‘What bills am I paying with that?’
Financial influencer Alice Raspin (pictured) urged her followers to re-evaluate their salaries in 2025.
According to data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, in the year to June 2024, real wage growth was 0.3 per cent.
Raspin added that any company offering a full-time job worth $60,000 in 2025 is “dreaming.”
“I don’t care how much you make, if it’s less than $60,000 a year, get a new job,” he said.
He admitted in the comments that he has no tertiary qualifications but has been working full time for the past 10 years.
Ms Raspin told Daily Mail Australia that while a five-figure salary might work for younger people with fewer commitments, she, like many others, cannot afford to be paid less.
“I think $65,000 is about right if you live with friends or at home and don’t have kids while saving to buy a house or travel,” he said.
“But when you’re 28, have a kid, and live away from home, anything under $70,000 is going to cut it.”
Many viewers agreed that $60,000 is not enough to live in a major city.
“I’m so sick of salaries not keeping up with the cost of living crisis,” one wrote.
Another added: “I just turned down a government job for $50,000.”
A third wrote: “I won’t get out of bed for less than $100,000 a year.”
Another added: “$125,000 is the new $65,000.”
One viewer who earned $60,000 a year revealed that he was struggling to make ends meet and only had $100 left over each fortnight.
Ms Raspin (pictured) said while $60,000 is enough for some Australians, it is unsustainable for urban families.
However, some viewers disagreed with Mrs. Raspin.
“If you need a job, you’ll take what you can until a better opportunity arises,” one commented.
Another added: “We’ve all started somewhere – most traders start their careers with $30,000 a year.”
A third wrote: “Kids these days don’t have the foggiest idea.”
Others said it depended on the job, qualifications and experience.
