Young mother who poisoned her own 6-month-old baby ‘to win back her ex-boyfriend’ after dumping her
- The Logan woman, who is in her 20s, was jailed for five years on Friday
- She gave her baby ADHD medication twice, causing the poor to become seriously ill
- The court heard the mother created a “fake Facebook” based on her baby’s suffering
A mother who gave her six-month-old baby ADHD medication while desperately trying to gain sympathy from her ex-boyfriend has been jailed for five years.
The woman from Logan, Queensland, who is in her 20s and cannot be named by name for legal reasons, was convicted Friday after being found guilty of two counts of administering poison with intent to harm.
The court was told that the mother’s violation occurred over two weeks in late May and early June 2019. Quest Newspapers reported.
She took her “unresponsive” baby to a doctor’s clinic on May 22 last year and the court heard that the young mother was “not concerned” about the child’s condition.

The woman took pictures of her little girl’s body while she was in the clinic, the court was told.
The baby was in a “comatose state” when she was subsequently taken to Logan hospital. The baby was then transferred to Queensland Children’s Hospital.
Prosecutor Stephen Muir told the court that the mother had “told lies to the medical staff” during the trial and that a “fake Facebook account based on her daughter’s suffering” was created on May 26.
The mother used the social media account to send messages to her ex-partner that ‘feigned ignorance’ about her baby’s illness.
The young woman told doctors that no one in her home was taking Ritalin, but it was later revealed that one of her children was taking the medication for ADHD.
The baby was released from IC on May 28, and the mother gave her child again amphetamines shortly after, and the symptoms of agitation, high heart rate, insomnia, and abnormal limb movements quickly returned.

The baby was returned to the ICU and her mother was arrested on May 31. Police confiscated the mother’s phone and medicines.
On June 5, the baby was released from the ICU and has since made a full recovery.
The court heard that her mother used the Facebook account until June 11 to contact her ex-partner.
Judge Craig Chowdhury told the young woman that she was “very lucky” not to have killed her baby.
The mother will be eligible for parole in 12 months, with Judge Chowdhury noting her lack of criminal history, young age, rehabilitation attempts and her upbringing.
